Cataract Surgery in Singapore: What to Expect Before, During & After

Cataract surgery is one of the most common and effective procedures performed to restore clear vision. In Singapore, where access to advanced medical technology and skilled ophthalmologists is readily available, this surgery is safe, quick, and highly successful. If you or a loved one is considering cataract surgery, understanding what to expect before, during, and after the procedure can help ease anxiety and support better outcomes.

Before the Surgery: Consultation & Preparation

Your cataract journey begins with a thorough eye examination. An ophthalmologist will assess your overall eye health, measure the severity of the cataract, and discuss your vision goals. You’ll also undergo tests to determine the appropriate intraocular lens (IOL) to be implanted.

Depending on your eye condition and lifestyle, the surgeon may recommend a monofocal lens (for distance vision), a multifocal lens (for both near and far), or a toric lens (to correct astigmatism).

Once scheduled, you’ll receive instructions for pre-operative care. This may include temporarily stopping certain medications, using prescribed eye drops, and arranging for someone to accompany you on the day of surgery.

During the Surgery: Quick and Painless

Cataract surgery is typically done as a day procedure and takes about 15 to 30 minutes per eye. In most Singapore clinics, the process involves phacoemulsification, where a small ultrasound device breaks up the cloudy lens, which is then removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia with sedation. You’ll be awake but relaxed, and there’s no pain involved. The surgical area is numbed, and a sterile cover will be placed around your eye. Most patients report only mild discomfort or pressure.

Thanks to modern techniques and equipment, complications are rare and recovery begins almost immediately.

After the Surgery: Recovery & Care

After surgery, you’ll rest briefly before being discharged. Your vision may be blurry at first, but improvement is usually noticeable within a few days. Your doctor will prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops to prevent infection and aid healing.

You’ll be advised to:

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes

  • Refrain from strenuous activities

  • Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect from light sensitivity

  • Follow up with scheduled appointments

In Singapore, post-op reviews are typically done the next day, one week later, and again after a month to ensure everything is healing well.

Most patients regain significantly improved vision within 1–2 weeks. If both eyes require surgery, the second eye is usually treated after the first has healed.
